Restoring the Dignity of Kenya’s Smallholder Farmers: Why PAFID’s Climate-Smart Agriculture Journey Deserves Your Vote

Introduction: Hope in the Hands of Smallholder Farmers

Across Kenya, smallholder farmers rise every morning determined to till their fields despite droughts, floods, and unpredictable seasons. Their strength defines Kenya’s resilience. Today, this determination is being recognised nationally.

PAFID (Participatory Approaches for Integrated Development) has been shortlisted among Kenya’s Top 5 organisations in the “Best in Agriculture” category of the 2025 NGO Awards — a celebration of organisations transforming lives through impact and innovation.

This nomination is more than an institutional honour; it’s a tribute to every farmer who continues to cultivate dignity amid the realities of climate change.

Our Journey of Transformation

For over a decade, PAFID has collaborated with smallholder farmers to transform Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) into a movement grounded in community, sustainability, and self-reliance.

Through partnerships, innovation, and farmer-led extension, we have achieved:

200,000+ farmers reached across 25 counties.
20,000 CSA Champions trained and mentoring their peers.
50,000+ acres converted to Conservation Agriculture (CA).
48% yield increase among adopting households.
1,000,000+ trees planted for soil regeneration and carbon sequestration.

Each figure reflects restored hope, sustainable incomes, and renewed confidence among farming families.

Dignity, Innovation, and Climate Action

At the heart of PAFID’s mission lies a belief that every farmer deserves dignity. By promoting minimum tillage, water-efficient solar irrigation, and CSA Champion entrepreneurship, we’ve shown that rural transformation is possible through innovation that is by farmers, for farmers.

Our initiatives, such as tractor-drawn rippers that cut fuel consumption by up to 50%, have not only improved productivity but also protected the environment. In villages once severely affected by drought, women and youth are now earning a livelihood, planting trees, and leading climate-smart change.

Why the 2025 NGO Awards Nomination Matters

The NGO Awards received 327 nominations across 18 categories, with only 90 finalists selected nationwide. Being shortlisted in Best in Agriculture places PAFID alongside Kenya’s most impactful organisations, including Solidaridad, Practical Action, RACIDA, and Self Help Africa.

The recognition underscores PAFID’s role as a national leader in Climate-Smart Agriculture, advancing the goals of Zero Hunger (SDG 2) and Climate Action (SDG 13).
